Febrile Fits

Hi,

I am Dr.Bruno.  I have read your question and understand your concerns. Let me try to help you

Question 1 : Earlier also my Son had high fever with 104 F temp but never had febril seizure. Was that due to any durg infection (as we gave him para the whole night and suddnely in the morning gave Meftal-P).
Answer 1 : There are lots of factors which determine febrile seizures other than the temperature. So please don't get confused. Even with Temperature, the Rate of increase of temperature is more important than the actual temperature at the time of seizure.

Question 2 : What could be the reason for sudden fever. Also note today morning we notice that a new teeth was comming. I am confused.
Answer 2 : It can be a simple viral fever. If the fever has settled by now, you need not worry. If the fever is continuing, you have to do some investigations

Question 3 : Also advise on how to proceed further to know more about by Son s seizure.
Answer 3 : Just give him Sponging with Ice Water and keep few cubes of Ice in his Axilla when he gets fever. Please don't hear to your parents of other seniors saying that Ice Water or Ice cubes will produce Cold. Seizures are more harmful than cold. You have to prevent them. So Always Ice Cold Water and Ice Cubes even when the temperature rises a bit

What causes dizziness and double vision after suffering from viral meningitis?

Hi,

I am Dr.Bruno.  I have read your question and understand your concerns. Let me try to help you

Question : What causes dizziness and double vision after suffering from viral meningitis?
Answer : Meningitis Causes Scarring (damage) of Sub arachnoid spaces. It is through these spaces blood vessels that carry blood to your brain stem travel

Assume the Blood vessels as flexible pipes (or hoses) that carry water.
What will happen if some stones are thrown over them. They will compress the flexible pipes. Isn' tit

Same way
Due to Meningitis, the areas around the blood vessels (Sub Arachnoid Spaces) are damaged. Hence they interfere with Blood Circulation to your brain stem

This causes dizziness and Double Vision

Some Times,
The Nerves can also be directly involved by the scarring
(That is electric lines running along the pipes)

Most of these cases will heal completely

Anyhow, I would advise you to do another MRI after 4 weeks and compare both

Hope you found the answer helpful.

Why does my beard itch ?

Dear Sir

Itching of Beard depends on two Factors

1. The Number and Type of Micro Organisms in the Beard
2. The Sensitivity of the skin

-

More Microbes - More Itching
More Sensitive - More Itching

-

Of these two, sensitivity of the skin is something you were born with
So
You cant change that very easily

But
You can reduce the number of microbes by Washing

-

Just increase the frequency and duration of washing your beard.
You will see a reduction in itching

What is alcohol's specific impairing effect on the brain/bodily functions that make it more common to wet the bed when inebriated?

Hi,

I will explain in detail

First the basics

Basic 1 : Alcohol causes loss of inhibition or Alcohol reduces inhibition.

Normally, Limbic System or other Primitive parts of brain want to do something, but the frontal lobe is against that and inhibits the "impulse" . . . In other words, Frontal Lobe reduces the Impulsive Behaviour.

Alcohol, reduces this inhibition
In other words,
Alcohol increases impulsiveness

Is this Clear ??

Now Come to Basic 2 : Micturition Reflex
This is a reflex for which afferent signal is filling of bladder
Efferent signal is contraction of Detrusor Muscles and Relaxation of Sphincters

The normal reflex is Emptying as soon as there is filling

But
As the Child Grows, the frontal lobe takes over the control and allows emptying only inside a Rest Room and that too only after the dress has been removed

Basic 3 : Micturition Reflex is inhibited by Frontal Lobe. Alcohol reduces this inhibition. So Alcohol favour micturition Reflex

When Alcohol reduces functions of Frontal Lobe, the inhibitory signals are lost and as soon as the bladder fills, the detrusor contracts, sphincter opens and the person passes Urine

Good at writing Bad at Speaking

Question :
************
When I write, I sound intelligent, and can get my Point across effectively. However, every time I Open my mouth to speak, I sound like a total Idiot. Everything always comes out wrong; Nothing ever comes out right. I can never get Across what I am trying to convey. People never" get the point" of what I am saying; it's very Frustrating. I have a lot of intelligent thoughts And good ideas, but if I try to express them Verbally, it always sounds really garbled and Disjointed. I am eloquent when I write, but When I talk, I stammer and fumble and look like a Fool. What is the reason for this?

-oOo-

My Reply
************
Dear Sir

Expression of Thoughts can be either Emotional or Conceptual

Among the Conceptual Expression of Thoughts, there are two variants
1. Through Writing
2. Through Speaking

So, there are three neural circuits in Brain that express that you feel

And
The three neural circuits are in various stages of development in various individuals

So
Some are good speakers but poor writers
Some are good writers but poor speakers
Some are Good Writers as well as Good Speakers
Some are neither :)

(
Same way, some people would like to read a mail to know the response. Some prefer a phone call. Why ? It is because just like how you have various pathways for expression of thought, there are various input pathways too. Those whose neural circuits for symbols is stronger prefer a SMS or Mail. Those whose neural circuits for sounds is stronger prefer a phone call
)

Now
Coming back to your problem

Your neural circuits that deals with Speaking (From Brocas Area) is "relatively weaker" than your intellect and the neural circuits that deals with writing which are very very strong.

So
You are finding it difficult to talk

But, please wait

Your Speech Pathway is not really weak. It appears to be relatively weaker because your Thinking and Writing Circuits are extremely Strong.

In Other words, You think faster, Your Hands are able to cope up with that speed, but your mouth is not yet coping up, and hence you stammer . .

The Good News : A person with good intellect and good writing skills (as evidenced from your question) can easily develop his speech too . . All it needs is Self Confidence [which I have given here ;) ] and practice [which you have to do]

Start Practising Today . . .Sorry, now itself :) :) :)

Best wishes for a successful career.

Science Does not Know everything

From https://www.facebook.com/spine.brain.surgeon/posts/10153158826489828

1. Science doesn’t know everything.
Comedian Dara Ó Briain said it best: “Science knows it doesn’t know everything, otherwise, it’d stop. But just because science doesn’t know everything doesn’t mean you can fill in the gaps with whatever fairy tale most appeals to you.”
2. There are other ways of knowing.
Sure there are: intuition, imagination, dreams, revelation, tradition, speculation, the “stoned thinking” favored by integrative medicine guru Andrew Weil, anecdotes, and personal observations. All of these can lead people to strong beliefs, to the illusion of knowledge; but until those beliefs are tested, we can’t trust them to reflect reality. Only the scientific method can lead to the kind of reliable knowledge that took humans to the moon and transformed AIDS from a death sentence into a chronic disease with near-normal life expectancy.
3. Science is only a belief system, just another religion.
Science is founded on only two underlying premises: that there is a material world, and that we can learn about how that world works. Science doesn’t “believe” anything; it asks and verifies. It has an excellent track record of practical success. The scientific method unquestionably works.
4. Science keeps changing its mind.
Yes, and that’s a good thing. Scientific conclusions are always provisional. Scientists follow the evidence wherever it leads, and they often have to change course as new evidence becomes available. CAM refuses to change its mind even in the face of clear evidence. Scientific medicine stops using treatments if they are proven not to work; medical history is littered with discarded theories and practices. CAM never rejects any treatment and hardly ever tests one of its treatments against another to see which is superior.
5. Science is dogmatic.
Yes, they inconsistently argue that science is dogmatic while also arguing that science keeps changing its mind. Dogmatism is found in CAM, not in science.
From Doctor-bashing is a popular sport practiced by believers in complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) and purveyors of quack remedies. Since they can’t compete in the arena of science, their only recourse is to criticize science-based medicine—as if pointing out its imperfections somehow proves their own methods are superior! It’s like creationists who imagine that controversies about small details of evolution somehow prove that “God did it.”
The sport of doctor-bashing involves A LOT OF CAPITALS, miz-speld wurds, egregious errors of grammar and usage, abuse of logic, misrepresenting the facts, rejecting the scientific method, gratuitously insulting individuals rather than grappling with the issues, and so on. If players can find a way to compare doctors to Nazis, they get extra points. They tediously repeat the same false accusations and flawed arguments that have been rebutted ad nauseam.
I thought skeptics might find it useful to have a list of some common CAM arguments along with their rebuttals. These are not meant as debating points, since trying to debate true believers is as useless and frustrating as trying to glue ice cubes to the ceiling. But these points might be useful in discussing the issues with people who have not yet donned the jersey of a doctor-bashing team.
